Marko Vovk and Henry Sterling show you how to properly clean a draft induced furnace blower, motor, and circuit board. The blower or sometimes referred to as squirrels cage is removed from the furnace blower compartment. The blower is taken to the exterior to be washed and cleaned. After cleaning, the furnace is fired up, tested, and a combustion analysis is performed. Dust permits excessive heat, pressure drop, and friction, all of which can damage the furnace. Compressed nitrogen is used to blow dust off the motor and circuit board. Soap and water are used to clean the blower or squirrel cage. Some service calls really are this easy. This was what I refer to as a 'nuisance call'. Same goes for the ones where the service disconnect is in the off position or the breaker is not turned on. Some customers actually have to be told to set the thermostat to the 'cool' position and lower the temperature setting. "No, ma'am. The thermostat doesn't know you're sweating and automatically turn on the air conditioning for you". |

Yet another nuisance call. The installer should've removed the installation instructions from the blower compartment. The start-up guy should've noticed the problem when inspecting the system. The builder probably didn't notice anything wrong. It likely took a little while for the blower to bite off a few pages and chew'em up. This is a classic example that demonstrates how blower assemblies are precision-balanced. A few shreds of paper can throw everything out of whack. |
