CHARLOTTE -- Tuesday, the mercury dipped well below freezing, into the teens, causing a spike in service calls. Technicians are working around the clock troubleshooting problems. "Last night the heat was working fine. Woke up this morning and it was cold," homeowner Ronald Freeman told his service technician Rob Hess. It was only 9:30 am and Hess was already on his third call of the day. And he said it wouldn't be his last. "We had 1500 calls yesterday, which is about triple the volume that we normally have. We've got 90 people out in the field between our installers and our service techs. Everybody is out today working." Folks across the Charlotte area woke up Wednesday in a deep freeze with temperatures hovering in the teens and 20's across the viewing area. And whenever the mercury drops, Hess said calls at Morris Jenkins go up. "Everybody calls because they put off doing any maintenance," he said. "I hear all the time we were going to do that decided to wait and now it's an emergency." It's a common mistake Hess sees homeowners make all the time. "It's like buying a new car. You want to have oil changed, you want to have the brakes checked out," he said. "You definitely want to have it checked before a small problem turns into big problem." In this case, the igniter on Freeman's furnace went out, costing him about $250 and a warm night's rest. So Hess has a warning for homeowners.
